Sydney Therapies
Life can be difficult. We all experience problems. While our problems may come in many different shapes and sizes, some people say that all problems come from our difficulty in making and maintaining intimate, satisfying relationships.
Counselling focuses on thinking and feeling and 'doing' in the 'here and now'. Sometimes this can be challenging and confronting, but with the help of a therapist it can be very valuable. Counselling can greatly improve relationships 'in the real world' and therefore can improve our level of satisfaction and happiness in life.
Counselling aims to provide you with an opportunity to:
- explore and understand issues which have a negative impact on your life
- develop greater self awareness and understanding of your relationships
- help you work towards living in a more statisfying and resourceful way
The counsellor's role is to facilitate your work in ways that respect your values, personal resources and capacity for choice within your cultural context.
How to get the most out of counselling
- focus on the here and now
- become aware of your thoughts and feelings
- be willing to share your thoughts and fellings
- take responsibility for your thoughts and feelings and actions
- avoid blaming others
- attempt to experiment with new behaviour
- learn to listen
- be open to receiving honest feedback
- be willing to continue communication even when you feel uncomfortable
- hang on in there!
